Heute erscheint Double Life, der vierte Longplayer der Indierocker NIGHT MOVES. Exklusiv für Popmonitor hat die Banda aus Minneapolis die zwölf neuen Songs kommentiert …
TRYING TO STEAL A SMILE
This track paints the picture of a desperate/sad man who lies to himself about the reality of his romantic dalliances, lifestyle, and his future, but at the same time deep down knows the truth and refuses to adjust accordingly. It’s about looking for love in all the wrong places and being upset when it doesn’t work out.
DAYTONA
Someone stole the license plate off our van right after I purchased new tabs. It really pissed me off so I wrote a little tune about a ne’er-do-well fuck-up who breaks someones heart. It can almost be seen as the next scene in this movie ‘double life’ where the character from the first song carries forth in heartbreak, but now we have two characters and we get a little more context. You can view it as a fresh new scene further painting a world of thievery, drugs, alcohol, and speeding off with someone else’s identity. We have two characters who are now at fault and immersed in a world of imperfections.
HOLD ON TO TONIGHT
Here we enter a world of loneliness that is only comforted by booze and fond memories of things past and holding onto something that is no longer real.
ALMOST PERFECT
“Nothing’s ever perfect, though some days it was” carries forth this sentiment of a confused man vacillating between acceptance and confusion. We wanted a sort of Roy Orbison cinematic twang mixed with Forensic Files melted plasticity. Our drummer was going through a breakup at the time and wrote the chords and melodies and I came up with the lyrics and tones, I think this element furthers the track’s significance.
STATE SPONSORED PSYCHOSIS
This song was inspired by a friend’s hardships with love, lawyers, and mental illness which culminated in them eventually being committed to a psychward. The soft tone juxtaposes with the heavy sentiments.
RING MY BELL
This one is about waking up hungover on a sunday morning and needing a pick-me-up. It speaks to bad behaviors and familial patterns of addiction. It’s a two sided tale- one being cautionary and the other a tawdry romp you’ve done too many times over. It calls for a partner to partake in misdeeds, cuz sometimes you just need a friend.
THE JUDGE
This jam takes on two sides- one of the judge and the other the defendant. It sees someone on trial for their deviances and past indiscretions while also taking on the perspective of the condemnatory “judge” – it’s probably just an internal dialogue where you yourself are the judge, jury, and executioner of your own self. This song is about getting nailed by the law and having a panel judge you and your life choices. There’s an internal dialogue- one of self reflection being the judge of yourself-… I was thinking about how people sitting in jail are supposed to reflect on their choices as part of their punishment, so in a way you’re supposed to let yourself eat away at yourself…it’s kinda of like you are the judge at a certain point that is going to decide your fate- are you gonna live or let yourself hang on the gallows- talking despair – talking hope.
WHITE LIQUOR
This picking pattern chord progression was just something I always would soundcheck with before a show and our bassist Micky Alfano said, “you’ve got to turn this into a song!” So I went ahead and wrote some country styled lyrics about boozin’. There’s nothing too crazy here. It’s just a fun song to sing and play. The pedal steel featured in this track was done by Connor Gallaher and it really kicks it up notch. At one point in time we drank a lot of tequila so I think that’s what I’m referring to when I sing “White Liquor,” although it should be “Red Wineeeeeeee,” but that just doesn’t have the same ring to it …
OUR BOOZING ANTHEM
This one’s gonna be for the dirt dog booze bags out there. Hoping at this point in the set the shots start flowing to the stage. Middle fingers a blazin’…Obviously some conflicting spirits within the song which gives it legs…
THE ABDUCTION
Not completely sure what this song is about. It’s mostly a musical atmosphere piece with catchy melodies. I think the lyrics are about decay and how you yourself decays over time if left to your own devices. Something about heisting your own body…vanity and fighting yourself…brokenness…Again death and loss…times move forward and rolls over people. I was thinking about bar rats I’ve known in the music scene who are still ‘hanging on chance.’ This song’s lyrics are an amalgam of emotions. Sometimes I’m talking about being jaded with the creative process, other times I’m talking about emptiness of the music scene/path of a musician, some lines are about death and making peace with the reality of things having gone. Some songs are just painting emotions…
THIS TIME TOMORROW
This was one of the last songs written for the album. I think I was angry and growing weary of the whole writing/demoing process. I sorta crafted this as a song for someone who hates their job but also is completely beholden to it. I was also going through some personal relationship stuff so it’s a confluence of troubles presented through song.
DESPERATION
You know how Saturday Night Fever is a movie all about good times, fucking, dancing, making it, and partying up until the end-? well that’s this track. That type of thing…
