Palila – Children Will Be Furious

Heute erscheint Children Will Be Furious, das jüngste Album von PALILA. Exklusiv für Popmonitor haben die Hamburger Indie-Rocker ihre neuen Songs kommentiert, in denen es auch etliche Bezüge zum Nebenprojekt WOULD gibt …

THE BEGINNING OF THE BEGINNING / THE BEGINNING

Originally written on the ukulele, this song was first released on the second album of Would. With Palila, we reworked it into a loud, blasting Dinosaur Jr. homage. The lyrics were inspired by a short documentary about how each generation believes it might witness the end of the world. But what if humankind is still at the very beginning of its existence, just about to embark on a long journey through the universe? With its hopeful yet reflective tone, this song sets the stage for what’s to come.

SONGS FOR BEARS

Christoph wrote the lyrics for this massive, heavy song—a surreal and atmospheric piece that pulls the listener deep into the wilderness. It captures a moment of isolation and introspection, where nature and personal reflection merge.

PURE

Clearly a homage to Queens of the Stone Age (we won’t deny that the riff is basically stolen from Little Sister). A song about duality—between appearances and inner struggles. It plays with contrasts: calm on the surface, restless underneath.

TO THE SUN

Almost didn’t make it onto the album, and now it’s one of my favorite songs to play live. It has a soft side but breaks out into a hymn-like, explosive chorus. A melancholic yet soaring track about burning out and transformation—the protagonist crashes into the sun, turning destruction into something almost beautiful.

ORION

This song is basically the follow-up to „Circles“ (from our previous album). Most of the time, I start writing a song on acoustic guitar, sometimes on electric, and occasionally on bass. „Orion“ started with a bassline, and I wanted it to breathe, so we took our time, letting the vocals come in quite late. The bassline was inspired by Rachel & Joseph by Belgrad. Lyrically, it’s about breaking free from expectations and rewriting one’s fate. Cosmic imagery meets raw energy, making it one of the album’s most dynamic moments.

PERRO RHODAN

Time to rock again—hats off to our stoner rock heroes. A noisy, satirical take on escapism, industry, and ambition. Named after the iconic sci-fi character, the song explores the tension between progress and personal downfall.

HOLLYWOOD, SAVE THE DAY

This song has quite a history. Christoph wrote the initial lyrics, but I had to replace them after realizing there were too many syllables and too little time to breathe between the verses. A cynical anthem about modern pressures, self-improvement, and the illusion of happiness. The song dissects the expectation to always be productive and positive.

BACK

Another ode to Queens of the Stone Age. I’ve been writing these kinds of songs for over 20 years now, and every once in a while, one of them ends up on an album. Listeners who enjoy „Back“ will be happy to hear that the fourth Would album (coming this autumn) will have plenty of those moments. The song itself is about cycles, returns, and how time changes our perspectives. A mix of poetic storytelling and rediscovery.

1999

Looking back on past friendships and regrets, 1999 blends nostalgia with raw honesty and self-deprecation. Its slow pace and groove make it a perfect soundtrack for a late-night car ride.

MYSTERIOUS ORDINARY MAN

Another song that was first introduced through Would. I originally wrote it on acoustic guitar and couldn’t decide which direction to take—quiet or loud? So I took both. Here, you can hear the loud version. Lyrically, it’s an observation of an unknown figure—someone we see every day but never truly know. A meditation on loneliness, connection, and the unnoticed stories around us.
