JEREMY MESSERSMITH – Heart Murmurs

IT’S ONLY DANCING

I wanted this song to play out like a 3 act film. In the first verse we introduce the characters and themes, second verse we change the setting and expand on their relationship, then in verse three the fantasy is dashed on the cold rocks of reality.

TOURNIQUET

This is a tune that’s more about love in an ideal sense than a real, practical way. It’s the kind of love I aspire to. Also, the time signature is 12/8, which is kind of bizarre for a pop song.

BRIDGES

This was my favorite song on the record for a long time. I think it mainly comes from the idea that in love, „You can’t choose not to get hurt, but you can choose who hurts you.“

STEVE

Growing up in a fundamentalist church, I often heard the phrase „God created them Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.“ It’s a horrible, hurtful saying, but it always made me wonder about Steve.

GHOST

This track is my take on a „strum and thump“ song.

HEIDI

For university, I went to a small religious college. It was fairly common for guys to walk up to women and say „God just told me that I’m supposed to marry you.“ Also, couples would break up because one of them wanted to „spend more time with god.“ I still find it slightly crazy, but also funny. Heidi is a love song about a woman who is madly in love with Jesus.

I WANT TO BE YOUR ONE NIGHT STAND

I write songs from titles frequently. This title made me laugh and the song was a lot of fun to write.

YOU’LL ONLY BREAK HIS HEART

This might be my favorite track. I think the string arrangement is the best I’ve ever had on one of my records.

BUBBLIN’

This song was largely inspired by my bandmates Andy Thompson, Dan Lawonn and Brian Tighe. They love prog rock like Rush and Yes and desperately pushed me in that direction!

HITMAN

This song is so fun to play live. I’m a pretty mellow singer songwriter guy most of the time, so getting to actually rock out is pure bliss.

SOMEDAY, SOMEONE

This is the „after dinner mint“ song on the record.
