Asian Dub Foundation – A History Of Now

LONDON EYE

Looking down from my 13th floor flat at the space between my eyeliner and the London Eye itself: “From here I cut the town into a million , it’s easy to see the ones with the biggest slice.”

URGENCY FREQUENCY

A bad boy 50 years from now. A hybrid organic/binary nutcase. “You missed me because you arrived before you left.” Time and space are confused, and technological change has become infinite. You think 2011 has a short attention span?

LONDON-SHANGHAI

Shanghai is the new frontier, the iconic city of 21st century success. This song is like a parody of “On Broadway.” Featuring the sultry strings of the wonderful Chi 2.

A HISTORY OF NOW

A song originally about sensory overload and contrasting it with life in the deserts of Mali – but it has become much more, the rhythm and sounds having become resonant with the Arab uprisings .

SPIRIT IN THE MACHINE

The sound of 21st century industry marching en masse from the east. Featuring the mighty Ministry of Dhol. Ancient rhythms turn to mass production as power shifts from the West.

WHERE’S ALL THE MONEY GONE?

It feels like we’’e turned money into an independent entity, an ever-twisting tsunami that sweeps us along, completely out of control. And yet its value is, in the end, only in our heads,.it’s negotiated. But there always seem to be the privileged few that ride the crest of the wave and up looking down on the wreckage they made from their private helicopters. Featuring the wonderful Mr. Ed Skrein om MC duties.

IN ANOTHER LIFE

A song that was originally going to be about one of the band’s experiences with Past Life Regression therapy, but ended up being a bit more down to earth. It became about Aktar Ahmed (our M.C.) imagining what his life would have been like had his parents not emigrated from Bangladesh.

POWER OF 10

A peaceful moment based on a 10-beat indian Raga.

FUTUREPROOF

At one stage I found myself in charge of the band’s social network sites. It seemed like a new form of slavery, a new platform emerging every week or so. I threw my laptop out of the window. I am now futureproof. Technology hasn’t liberated us, it’s just raised expectations.

THIS LAND IS NOT FOR SALE

A dedication to indigenous people everywhere fighting against governments trying to take their land , particularly in Mexico. Featuring the powerhouse vocals of Kerieva.

TEMPLE SIREN

A track based on the wild rhythms of Tamil Nadu in Southern India. A meditation on power, while ADF run the voodoo down ..
