JENKS
…is a club I (David) used to go to when I was younger
When messin about with Dombrance in the studio we thought it’d be fun to imagine it as the last place of the resistance where humans and creatures would meet and get away from thos troubled world and anything would be possible
We loved the idea of a classic pop song structure at first and then this really long psychedelic bridge in the middle
‚Jenks‘ (pretty much like all the songs on the record) was us both performing in our studio in a live situation doing a lot of improv that we’d later assemble and edit
BAD RIVER
Leather leather reptilian slither
We tought of it as a liquid drug used in the club created by the creatures for humans
DISCO COCO
Party name at Jenks club
Refering to Jenks also as a temple, the temple of dissent and freedom
Got a bit of B52’s ingredient when it was produced by David Byrne
Inside good
Outside bad
Its a bit of an odd dance number
IN THE CAR
About two brothers
About us
Our desert song
Our highway by night
Our without a care in the world song
A song about being there for each other
Quite emotional and mystical this one
THE RIDE
About someone very dear to us who passed away who left us too early
Always there with us
We ride together eternally
This one is also very spontaneous
Quite intense and physical when we play it live
Very driving and fast
NEW LIFE
Being tired of fighting wars
Put down your guns
AUTONOMIC
Life in the off world
Connection is made between humans and creatures
It’s finally happened
More of a psychedelic techno number
Us both on our synths and drum machines and this is what came out
STAYING HOME
When you’re at home and just everything seems to go wrong
feeling down and lost
The will to try and get out of that state but you just cant bebothered
Tomorrow is another day
SINNER
More human than human
The creature has surpassed Its maker, who has trouble accepting it
All started with synths drones and us messing with our chainof guitar pedals and other effects, Dombrance already had the verse part we then developped together
We really wanted the vocals to be psychedelic and dreamy and cotton
THE REST OF THE WORLD
It’s cold and dark and you just need to get home to your lovedones
The perfect number to carry you back home
It was the end of the day after a great studio session We hadput our coats on and ready to leave when Dombrance had a call from his wife saying its cold and dark hurry home and during the call our gear was running and sequences goingrandom…he hung up and we wrote it in 12mns…still with ourcoats on.
